Compared to the downward revision to Germany, France and Italy, the European Commission had a slightly more optimistic forecast for Spain, albeit the main picture is still that the country will see negative growth.

The Commission predicts a 1 percent contraction for the country in 2012. That's after the Spanish central bank predicted a 1.5 percent drop and an IMF prediction of a 1.7 percent fall. While in Rome, Spanish Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy said he was optimistic about the EC's prediction and adds the Spanish government will negotiate with the EU as soon as possible to amend its deficit-reduction task this year.
