China accelerates speed to build low-income housing
At the beginning of China's 12th Five-Year Plan, the construction of low-income housing has accelerated. China is scheduled to construct 10 million low-income apartments and reconstructive houses of shantytowns in 2011, which will be the largest-scale construction in history.
By the end of April, the construction of 3.4 million low-income apartments and reconstructive houses of shantytowns have been started, accounting for 34 percent of the whole year's plan. The construction schedule is the fastest compared with the same period in history, according to news from the Ministry of Housing and Urban-Rural Development.
The completion of the current round of construction will be a priority for the low-income housing project in the second half year of 2011.
"The construction of 10 million low-income housing units is both an economic task and a political task. The low-income housing project is a promise given to national peoples by the central government as well as a marking project to improve people's livelihoods," said Jiang Weixin, the minister of Housing and Urban-Rural Development.
Jiang also emphasized that the construction of the low-income housing project cannot be relaxed at all. All parts of the country should start construction before the end of November this year. The completion of main structures should account for one-third of the low-income housing project.
