Nikkei falls below 9,800 line
Japanese stocks closed below the 9,800 line Monday, as yen continued to rise against its major counterparts.
The 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average dropped 64.82 points, or 0. 66 percent, from Friday to 9,794.38.
The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on The Tokyo Stock Exchange was down 3.29 points, or 0.38 percent, to 853. 21.
The dollar was in the mid-80 yen range, while the euro was hovering around the 116 yen line, for much of Monday trading in Tokyo.
Trading volume on the main section fell to 1,698.76 million shares from Friday's 1,911.68 million.
Turnover fell to 1,207.6 billion yen (150.95 billion U.S. dollars), down from 1,394.2 billion yen (17.34 billion U.S. dollars) Friday.
