Nikkei closes 1.44% lower

Tokyo stocks closed lower Thursday with the key Nikkei index down 1.44 percent.

The benchmark Nikkei 225 Average shed 131.05 points to 8,962.67. The broader Topix index was down 6.83 points, or 0.84 percent, to 810.80.

Trading volume on the main section contracted to 4,106.90 million shares from 4,905.37 million Wednesday.

On the First Section advancing shares beat declining ones 985 to 616, with 77 others remaining unchanged.
